Pinstriped cars have been notable to me for some time. I fancy the art, Shane not so much. When I was cast as a “Bad Girl” for Miss Midnight Mass, I thought it would be fun to don pinstriped shoes and a matching bag. The notion came across when Darrel of Doctor D Pinstriping hit my radar via Facebook.

Darrel free-handed these shoes for me, and wearing them is a treat. I have since learned that other pinstripers also decorate beyond cars. What a fun signature!

Matt and his truck

Matt built built this truck. He started the project when he was twenty years old, took some years off, and had a finished product at age twenty-five. He and I are now both twenty-nine. I cannot say that I have built such a masterpiece yet in my life. I admire what Matt has accomplished. I can appreciate the job he did sand blasting and doing the body work on the 1947 cab, as I watched my father do similarly to his 1953 Chevy cab. It is a ton of work to take that on as a home project. Matt was asked what he wanted anyone looking at his truck for the first time to know and here is his response:

Its chopped five and channeled six and the frame is kicked 5. Engine and transmission are 65 401 Buick and Turbo 400 Grille is 36 sectioned four inched. Bed is late 1940s Chevy that shortened and narrowed. 1948 Ford tailgate, 1937 Ford tail lights, gas tank is out of a boat, and rims are original 1940 Ford, steering original 1947 Ford.

When he starts this thing, is anyone else swooning?

I think we need to take a picnic. Throw down that blanket.

I’m not sure in this image which end of the truck is hotter…

Matt and I will both have our cars at Billetproof in Antioch Saturday, September 20. I will be in the pageant which will entertain the crowd in the afternoon. Say “hello” if you see either of us out there!

Engine Work

We ran a few hours late the day of our on-location shoot with Matt Martin. Agitated we would be forced to rush against the setting sun, I grabbed a last-minute and unplanned outfit as a back-up in case we ran out of light and could move to a garage. After all, Matt is a mechanic and the garage is where I thought he may be most comfortable. I learned from my shoots with Gravy that the more comfortable and relaxed we are, the better images we capture. Case in point: when I sort a set of images, most of what I land up using are from the second half of the shoot. The later images turn out better, with everybody at their highest level of comfort. No surprise then that although three story lines outlined the day’s shoots, I am pulling more images out of the impromptu garage set. Moral of the story: art must flow, and in a photo shoot the flow is a merge between photographer, subjects, objects, and the scene. Work it, baby!

I liked how the engine and many items in the garage matched the shirt I grabbed to wear.

Matt works hard on his body and at his trade. We thought it would be fun to show him off. Well pleased to have planned and nailed this shoot with him. It was a fun day.

Would You Help Me Out of This?

I adored this hat upon spotting it at the Sacramento Antique Faire months ago. Shane told me “no” so I bought it at the Folsom Antique Faire one week later. I have purchased many vintage pieces from the same family, including more hats and coats which will be featured in future blog posts! Shane says this hat looks like a funeral piece. I thought it a fantastic match to my car, real 1940s! Silver screen, baby! In this shot, the hat is paired with my authentic 1940s vintage platforms and 1950s authentic vintage blouse picked up at Racks Boutique in Midtown Sacramento. The blouse buttons all the way down the back, which sparked an interesting exchange: Why on earth do so many of these vintage pieces require someone to help put it on? How many people are flexible enough to button all their buttons neck to lower back?! Shane pointedly pause the conversation with a certain look, and I realized that also required is somebody to help her take it off! You saw those old films, “Would you help me out of this?” Only the skirt is a reproduction. Modern day shoes acquired at a clothing swap are featured in the bottom two images.

What Is Going Down?

I receive through the grapevine critical feedback regarding the recent onslaught of couple posts and images we produce. The notion to incorporate a man into my photos was hatched while speaking with a friend who happens to be a multi-award-winning car owner. A few weeks before Midnight Mass, we are chatting about show prep and he shares with me some stories about having his car photographed then inquires more about what it is like for the model and photographer. Consorting and exploring the experiences flows into an agreement to produce a shoot then I suggested we invite him to actually take a picture with his own car, why not? That night, I sleep on the notion and come up with three story lines to attempt to photograph, because Pinup and other photography is meant to tell a story. What story do we want to tell? You will find out, as our schedules permit this coming weekend as the day, six weeks out from the original plan. Keep your eyes peeled for Matt Martin and his handy work!

Plans with Matt fresh on my brain, Shane and I set out to Blues dance for the first time at the Firehouse 5 on the Sunday before Mass. Last dance of the night, and I spy a mysteriously dark and handsome gentleman keeping to himself in the corner. Why not? I ask for a dance and comment on his “Rockabilly” or Greaser style then during small talk plan to ask if he will attend Mass, but he beats me to it! Seven years in a row has he attended. I’m excited to continue the conversation, alas the last song of the night is constant partner switch. We gratefully land one another to finish the song. He delivers the information that he as well is a pinup model. I am floored and after the dance, I introduce Gravy to Shane and we enamor over the pictures he shows on his phone. We exchange information, and plan to meet up at Midnight Mass. You’ve all seen the images of our first shoot with Out-Law Photography. Brilliant. We meet up, enjoy the twenty minute shoot, and chat afterward. We like the images and experience so much, we make plans for another shoot and two weeks later we produce Cabaret, out of which I consider to pull out three good images as lucky. We pull twenty-six. I like the way we work together. We plan another shoot at the beach, and get yet another land fall ensues.

What’s going on? We enjoy photo shoots and have fantastic chemistry. We look good together and flow together naturally. I like the images we produce. Shane hesitates that what we are putting out is not “Pinup”. What is Pinup? An image informally hung that somebody wants to look at. We are not married to a set ideal of Pinup nor to producing a confined box of images that have to be a certain way. I enjoy vintage-inspired fashion. Shane enjoys taking pictures. This blog is named The Pinup Pursuit not because I plan to achieve perfect Pinup images, whatever that looks like, but because we are on a journey. We explore my adoration of vintage fashion, Shane’s photography fetish, and how all can play out in community. This is a pursuit as in we may never reach a set destination. Exploration always, and anyone interested is welcome to enjoy our pursuit of images you’d want to pin on the wall.
