Black Frost

I found this top at a clothing exchange with friends, versatile basics are essential to building awesome looks! Hat and gloves came from a Facebook shopping group, Just Love it vintage auctions, and my lovely vintage skirt with pockets (swoon) was an eBay find! Shoes were Burlington Coat Factory a year or two ago. Why would anyone shop in one place? Fend off frost bite this winter by accessorizing with gloves! Or they can also make you look mysterious and professional like Sherlock Holmes!

Winter White

California truly has only two seasons: hot and cold. Here in the north, cold has set in and boy am I pleased to have gloves and coats, hats and boots! Although with this hat and coat combo I found at Trailer Fest, my white heels also look fabulous for more of  a Fall appearance. The boots were a Savers find, but the shoes below are Irregular Choice, my favorite! The case is from the Sacramento Antique Faire. Mix and Match, ya never know what dreams may come! Pants are modern H&M.

Dressing Robe

What to wear? What to wear? Thinking to change it up…Clothing and what you decide to put on each day MATTERS. Scratching and pinching of clothing or shoes or accessories can aggregate your mood and alter a day. Sore feet is one common endurance, but other pieces can cause pain. Is it worth it? Sometimes, a resounding YES! But often we seek comfort to have a “best day”. Every gal can delight in having a dressing robe as she sorts through the wardrobe to decide how she feels today and what she wants to communicate to the world. Men do this as well, so I shall not exclude. Think of my sentence as olden books refer to all in the masculine, so shall I in the feminine. Why do so many of us have such extensive collections? So many moods and dispositions! We are complicated creatures. A friend who studied graphic design learned about colors and what they communicate. She told me folks often choose to wear red when going somewhere they would rather not, but that in design orange and red together communicate energy moving forward.

Put on your outfit and gaze in the mirror, how does it make you feel? What are you saying to those around you? What are you invoking? Set your attitude for the day, and if it is completely opposite from yesterday, that’s okay! Dressing is an opportunity to explore the character voices in your head and moods bouncing through your skin. Some women have been launched into a whole new world simply by changing their clothes, owning their body and feeling good about themselves actually inspires lifestyle changes and daily habits where looking and feeling coincide.  Don’t wait to look a certain way, today is the youngest you will ever be and the best body you have is now: dress it and as changes happen, embrace with alterations and new clothes. Never give up on yourself. We’ve all stood in tears in front of the closet. Find a way, girl! Even if you wear the same outfit over and again, if it makes you feel like an awesome human being, then keep wearing it.

I found this lovely at the Sacramento Antique Faire along with a collection from a woman’s estate who was just my size. My shoes were found in my favorite vintage style enthusiast online community.

Strike!

The second pant suit fashioned by Alexandra, this was a fun one to design as I wanted a tropical print but more practical pants so we chose a stretch denim and she added appliques from the matching fabric of the top! Genius!

Up to Bat

I looked for months at the Sacramento Antique Faire before finding the perfect vintage bat. This was the outfit to finally photograph with the prop. Vintage 1940s fabric of native American warriors, the young girl in me who was fascinated with Native American culture had an immediate affinity upon setting eyes to the fibers. This fabric would certainly gain a place in my wardrobe order. Alexandra informed me the material would not make good pants fabric, as it is very thin so we decided upon shorts and the design is ’40s perfection! Fully lined, she did such a rockin’ job! Sometimes when ordering clothes online we strike out, and at others we hit a home run. My experience with Alexandra was certainly a home run!

I planned to wear these in Las Vegas for Viva last Spring, but my daughter and I caught an early flight home due to a horrible stomach bug. I get to enjoy my clothes another occasion! This was fabulous in my shoot with Bad Bones Photography.

Thrilled with my first set fashioned by Alexandra, I requested that we make more so she sent images of material options. This is a vintage fabric which captured my heart, and is brilliantly durable. I love the colors and pattern and the way she made this. It matches my shoes found at a clothing swap! Perfect summer ensemble with my favored vintage weaved basket featuring a lucite lid and handle!

I saw this fabric and fell in love with it! Plus the style of the suit…drooling! An image of a set similar to this is what began a trilogy of orders from the lovely hand-made in USA Alexandra of California! Shoes found at my local thrift, and the purse at the Sacramento Antique Faire.

F— boxes! I’ve been insanely obsessing over this conundrum to examine to myself and justify what I enjoy. Label this, categorize that. I’m done. I enjoy clothes and styling. As people in the Western world we use our clothing and styles to communicate personality. My goal is to create images which highlight that. Simple. There’s no deeper motivation. I’m just a girl having fun. Fuck that box and its emotional/creative constipations.

Imperfect Pinup: Bowling Bliss

These are the images you didn’t see, that didn’t make the cut the first time I published on this outfit.

If you’ve been following my blog before the scrumptiously styled dandies by Daniel series, then the journey I’ve been on is known. To summarize, I would say that after giving birth to my daughter  and second child 6/9/13 in Yolo county, the animal came out in me and I decided to take better control of my life. For one thing, I started this blog. I began social dancing again. Dance evolved into a place where I was finding myself and others in meaningful ways I had been lacking. Supposing one may say dance was my church. Then finally, months of prayer answered, I had the encounter I longed for all my life. I am in love and intensely attached to another human. Our love ignites a warrior in me that wants to protect all that we share.

I process my journey through my form of art: vintage styling captured in photos. To continue with it I require quality images of the ensembles I put together, and the man responsible for many of the images seen here is also my ex husband. Photographers are willing to work with me, but I wrestle with whether or not to continue. This is my platform and a place to celebrate my femininity. Alas, some think Pinup is a bunch of girls making pictures that say, “F*ck me.” That is not my intent, but if it is received that way then where does my responsibility end and another’s begin? At times I think to scrap this whole project and take it offline. Then I look at a paragraph such as the one above and all the links to my story and variety of images we have created — my friends and I as well as the folks I have met (I adore that image laying on my car)! I’ve worked hard and taken some breaks. The masks came off. I’ve had some fiascos. I won an award. I had a vintage fantasy series on the beach straight out of Grease. I got to play with Viet Nam era as well as WWII/Korean War.  We experimented with raw boudoir as well as black lights. We played Cabaret, I processed some pain, and I even got cheeky. I learned how to fight with two blades, then I learned for what I was fighting. But not before I put my finances in the red purchasing pieces for countless fashion shoots including some trilogies of jackets, prom dresses, and Asian dresses which only scratch the surface.  Now I ask this question: Do I work my tail off to continue creating? Is it worth it? No matter if anyone watches as I do this for myself. Alas the man I love questions this whole genre and believes it stupid. Sometimes I agree, silly games with my closet. Then I realize I’ve been playing with my wardrobe since I was a little girl…this is what I do. Now I have an opportunity to collaborate even more with folks who enjoy vintage fashion. I grew up in classic car culture, and while I may not be the best Pinup out there, I own and enjoy my corner of it. Each has his own understanding of the world in this present moment, and my man is learning to enjoy and incorporate my culture into his world much as I do the same for him when we spend hours playing Guild Wars 2.

As much as I think to scrap the blog, I can say a few things in defense of today’s Pinup. Amazing people in this world find and preserve or upgrade precious pieces of our American heritage every day in all things from cars to furniture to clothes and accessories. We adore the style as well as our heritage. My lover has learned to admit that something magical happens when we hop in the ’48 to cruise and catch a glimpse of glory days. Pinup for some folk may be purposed to make money. But for many women, Pinup is about process and empowering ourselves to learn to love our bodies and to express personality. I have posted about my struggle to indwell my post-two-babies body. Pinup certainly helped me to feel sexy in a world that tells me I need surgery. We are compelled to learn to make ourselves feel attractive because as women its our divine mantra to beautify the world, whether that means tending a garden or decorating a home or making music…we seek beauty in all its manifestations. Some who look into this type of photography say all women given the opportunity can benefit from a pinup shoot. The author in this article calls all women to try a Pinup photo shoot just once. Dare you to give it a whirl?

To learn about this outfit and props, see my previous post: Bowling Bad

Pinup encourages a gal to own any side of her personality and express it in the way she dresses and presents herself, capturing the moment in photos. I’m full of life! Learning to embrace it and blend with another human is the current puzzle. Cheers to your journey, dear reader!
